Epidemiological Aspects of Poisoning Children in Morrocco: Case of Tadla-Azilal Region

Abstract
The children poisonings is still an important public health problem in Morocco. The present work aimed to describe the poisoning cases recorded in the region of Tadla-Azilal in children less than 15 years. A descriptive retrospective study was conducted on all the poisoning cases registered between 1980 and 2008 by the Moroccan Poison Control Pharmacovigilance Center (CAPM). During this period, 2507 poisoning cases were collected. Their ages ranged from 01 day to 14 years, with a mean of 7.1 ± 4.7 years. Both sexes are affected equally by poisoning (c2=1.43, p>0.05). The majority of cases were due to accidental poisoning (89.7% of cases), followed by attempted suicide (8.0% of cases) with a lethality rate of 10.0 ‰. The significant morbidity was attributed to foods (39.2%), followed by drugs (13.6%) and agricultural products (13.4%). Patients with symptomatic state represented 94.4%.
