Abstract
Land use and cropping pattern plays a key role in bringing changes in agriculture. The analysis of land use pattern and cropping patternwould help in designing appropriate policies for efficient use of land. Secondary data for a period of 30 years (1988-89 to 2017-18) on landuse categories and area under different crops were collected from four taluks of Dharwad district (Dharwad, Hubli, Kundgol and Navalgund)representing plain area and four taluks of Uttar Kannada (Sirsi, Siddapur, Yellapur and Supa) representing hilly area. The Markov analysiswas used to study the shifts in the shares of land use categories and the shares of crops for understanding about the dynamics of the changes.The land use categories in both the region have undergone several changes and the changes are not comparable between two areas becausethe two regions vary with respect to climatic and geographical factors.
