Abstract
On annual basis about 500 MT of crop residue biomass is generated in India, out of which 120-140 MT remains as surplus which is usually considered as a waste and leads to burning of it in open field. These open field burning causes emission of dangerous greenhouse gases in the environment and results in air pollution. If this biomass is utilized fruitfully with the process called briquetting, it could act as an alternative to fossil fuel. The briquetting technology converts lose waste materials into highly dense fuel. The study was carried out on formulation, optimization and production of paddy straw: soybean straw briquettes using molasses and cow dung as binder in different proportion using existing screw press briquetting machine and then its characterization was done. The briquettes produced in present study showed good calorific value i.e, about 4200 kcal/kg and density of as high as 550 kg/m3 . The density of produced briquette...
