Abstract
Indian agriculture has undergone a major shift from traditional crops to commercial crops in the recent decade. Cropdiversification is an important instrument to reduce production risk and market risk involved in agricultural sector. Diversification isessentially a dynamic process with crop choices and land allocation evolving over years. By opting for crop diversification, farmers canearn profits under situations when adverse climatic conditions prevails which are unsuitable for crops like rice, wheat etc. In this way, thedistress sale of produce can also be minimized to some extent. Crop diversification also helps in maintaining the soil fertility and the groundwater level. Diversification also ensures employment opportunities in rural areas throughout the year.
