Abstract
Manual transplanting of vegetable seedlings is a laborious, time- consuming and costly operation in vegetable production. Therefore itsmechanization is becoming urgent worldwide. Developing countries like India, China which have a lion's share (>50%) in the world'svegetable production (803 million tonnes) are also now facing issues related to transplanting. Several types of transplanters in automatic andsemi-automatic transplanter categories have been evolved but due to varying production areas, the semi-automatic transplanters are prevalentin developing countries. The other factors that are restricting their uses are needed to be understood properly. Therefore a review paper onmetering devices used on semi-automatic vegetable transplanters and their challenges in the process of transplanting are reviewed criticallyand put henceforth.
