Abstract
The major soil degradation problems faced by the state are soil erosion (mainly water erosion) acidity, salinity and micro nutrient deficiency. The present study aimed at harmonised compilation of district wise status and extent of different type of soil degradation in Kerala anddifferent conservation practices to tackle these problems. The productivity loss of important crops in Kerala due to soil erosion is 2-3 timeshigher than the national average. Kerala comes under the moderate priority state with 75 per cent of total geographical area (TGA) underrisk free zones, for taking land degradation control measures. Idukki (12.74 %), Palakkad (11.41 %) and Malappuram (9.21 %) has thehighest per cent of eroded area to the total geographical area among the districts. The total area of acid soils in Kerala is 3.8 million hectareswith highest per cent of acid soils to TGA are in Idukki (12.9%), Palakkad (11.6%) and Malappuram (9.2%). Salt aff...
