Abstract
Correlation and path analysis was carried out with eighty germplasm accessions and five checks, to understand the relationship and relative importance of plant morphological and productivity-related traits towards grain yield enhancement. Character association revealed that seeds per panicle (r = 0.893) and harvest index (r = 0.762) had a very strong and highly significant positive association with grain yield per plant. Similarly, panicle weight (r = 0.576), hundred seed weight (r = 0.403) and panicle width (r = 0.367) shows highly significant and positive association with grain yield per plant. This suggests that these characters can be considered as indicator traits while selecting plants for grain yield improvement. Path analysis revealed the true relationship of seeds per panicle with grain yield per plant and the role of flag leaf area in exporting photo-assimilates due to their high positive direct effects.
