Abstract
A study was carried out to assess the effect of seed priming using various antioxidants on seed quality enhancement in terms of seed physiological and biochemical attributes under laboratory condition in onion (CO (on) 5) and chilli (PKM 1). Seeds of onion and chilli were subjected to different seed priming treatments viz., Ascorbic acid (0.5% and 2.5%), Glutathione (0.05% and 1%) and α-Tocopherol (0.3% and 0.9%). These antioxidants were compared with untreated control seed. The onion seeds were soaked for 4 h whereas chilli seeds were soaked for 5 h and double the volume of solution was used for both the crops. From the results, the observed data clearly indicated the effectiveness of glutathione 0.05 per cent followed by ascorbic acid 0.5per cent in enhancing physiological quality of both onion and chilli seeds when compared to other treatments. In onion, the percentage increase over control in germination was 13 per cent due t...
