Abstract
The Bulgarian diaspora in the Azov Sea region emerged over 150 years ago. Displaced people from Bulgaria arrived in the area mainly from the southern part of Bessarabia. At present they live in the cities of Berdiansk and Primorsk and in the surrounding villages. This diasporic group is not widely known and has not received much scholarly attention. Their knowledge of the Bulgarian language and folk traditions seems rudimentary. Despite many attempts to reclaim the Bulgarian character of this community, a process of assimilation seems to be in progress.
