Abstract
The History of Bulgarian Literature by eminent Polish scholar Teresa Dąbek-Wirgowa appeared at a very inauspicious moment in Eastern European history: in 1980 Slavicists were definitely not preoccupied with literary history. Probably for this reason, the book did not attract sufficient attention either in Poland or in Bulgaria. In addition, it was published within a series intended for a very wide reading public. However, the book is organized around a very interesting conception of national literary development. The author evidently rejected the Bulgarian academic establishment’s dominant conceptions of literary development and opted for an approach reflecting her own perception of literary history. Central to that perception is a belief in the immanence of literary-historical processes.
