Abstract
The description of international milestones that have influenced the development of environmental education in Colombia and the exploration of the factors that have influenced its development are intended to contribute to the reflection and explanation about the nature of environmental education, the tensions and discussions. That are generated around its validity as a strategy for raising awareness and changing society's attitude towards the environment and its different connotations. In this work of theoretical nature, the methodology focuses on documentary review, chronology of events, assembly and analysis of them. The results show the poor conceptualization of what, why and why environmental education is carried out, as well as the lack of coordination between ecological and environmental institutions and groups.
