Abstract
The main objective of this article is to present an overview of integration attempts among South American countries since the contributions of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) on development until the creation of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR). Furthermore, some questions focused on energy issues in the region are explored. This paper considers that the proposals for greater approximation, initially developed by the Latin American Free Trade Association (LAFTA) and the Latin American Integration Association (LAIA), were the basic elements in the process that led to the creation of the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR), and which subsequently allowed for the creation of the Initiative for the Integration of the Regional Infrastructure of South America (IIRSA) by the Community of South American Nations (CASA) and UNASUR.
