Abstract
This article aims to analyze how Twitter was used as an important tool in the 2016 US elections, serving as a campaign platform for the candidate Donald Trump. Therefore, it seeks to analyze the campaign of the Republican candidate on Twitter, with emphasis on three of the most important subjects discussed in his efforts to presidency: immigrants and refugees; terrorism and relations with Russia. To investigate the relevance of the use of Twitter, this article investigates how social networks can be used to establish a "digital agenda", defining central themes in the political agenda, expand "digital presence", enhancing the message reach, and generate "digital conversations", broadening the interaction with the public. It’s concluded that Twitter was of the utmost importance during the campaign of Trump who, in adopting digital diplomacy, used posts up to 140 characters as a mean of communication to strengthen his campaign proposal...
