Abstract
Among the various alternative fuels, vegetable-oil based fuels have been attracting greater attention as a promising alternative to fossil diesel fuel for compression ignition (CI) engines. The objective of the present work is to predict the cetane number of a biodiesel from its fatty acid profile. It was seen that viscosity and cetane number of biodiesel is directly related to the fatty acid composition of the biodiesel. A comparison of the estimated viscosities with the measured values for biodiesel samples shows an agreement within a predicted error of 10% and that of the estimated cetane number shows an agreement within a predicted error of 5%. Keywords: Biodiesel, Cetane number, Viscosity, Fatty acid
