Abstract
Access to information laws not only grant unrestricted access to information but also promote transparency and government accountability. Nevertheless, nearly every such law includes provisions for exceptions. The extent and boundaries of these exemptions within freedom of information laws have sparked substantial legal discussions in the realm of international law. This paper analyzes the exemptions outlined in the Nigerian Freedom of Information Act of 2011, compares them to those in South Africa and other chosen jurisdictions, and provides recommendations for enhancement. Keywords: Freedom of Information Act, Access to Information, exemptions, Nigeria, South Africa.
